The University of Indianapolis was founded as a private teaching college in 1902. The university motto, and one principle in the liberal arts mission, is to provide “Education for Service”. The University of Indianapolis’ Social Work program is an extension of this core value.
Planning for the program began in the late 1970s. Unfortunately, few social welfare courses had been offered since the 1950s. A preliminary program, set forth by Dr. Phylis Lan Lin, was established within the Department of Behavioral Sciences. By the mid-1980s, the program was attracting students. It had proved to be a viable major. As a result, faculty began planning for Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accreditation. The curriculum was revised, and thus began the accreditation process.
On October 25, 1993, the program was granted formal candidacy for accreditation. Full accreditation was achieved in February 1997, and unconditional reaffirmation was granted in February of 2001.
Today the program flourishes. The program offers a generalist perspective to social work, preparing the graduate for practice in a variety of settings. The program seeks to produce graduates that embrace multidimensional practices, that address causes as well as symptoms, and that value and respect human diversity.
